Last Week I went to the IBI group's presentation discussing a sample planning for a sample rapid transit station neighbourhood downtown Kitchener.

Ok Before anybody gets excited this is a meta-meta thing. Basically the government of Ontario says the population in KW will double in aprox the next 25 years. In keeping with the green space planning for the areas between the existing cities population in the city will become more dense. Some form of rapid transit is suggested to relieve the burden of traffic. Based on that and that stations will be needed to handle transfers of mode etc. a study group was put together to ponder the question what would that look like, what kind of symbiotic relationship would be needed between the city and the rapid transit line to make it all work. They picked a location and have worked with residents and business owners to produce 3 possible neighbourhood plans.

It's an exercise taking necsesarily abstract goals and painting them with concrete plans so they can be communicated.

Anyway I liked their principles. They seemed trendy but (I hope) sound. I liked them too. There were 17.
interconnected streets, compact development, mixed land uses, walk-ability, natural open spaces, public realm, comercial centre, transit station/stop, streetscape design, mixed use buildings, architectural variety, narrow and calmed streets street facing buildings, relaxed parking standards, bicycle friendly streets/parking, market acceptance, public art.

The presentation had interesting things to say. I didn't like that they suggested that the city could choose a plan and make carbon copies of it up and down the line. No. Follow the principles but different neighbourhoods should have different characters. On the most basic level the percentage proportion of living:working:shopping space need to be varied along the line. For example, if one area has 70% living space where would 70% work if all areas had the same proportion? Their would need to be either about an even split in the line over-all or some folks living on the line would still need cars to get to work. Of course there will always be folks with cars into the foreseeable future but if the proportions are not allowed to balance then those cars would be required rather than optional.

Rather it's the principles that are copied up and down the line. each area would need to find its own character.

I'm looking forward to continued improvements downtown.

Yesterday I went to Ye's Sushi. I'll give you directions in Kitchenerese: beside Shakedown Street, across from where the Lyric Theatre used to be and the library was supposed to go.
Anyway, I had a wonderful entirely vegan lunch there. It's a "buffet", but there's no physical buffet. You just can order as many different little dishes as you'd like, for $13 at lunch. I don't like fish and seaweed, but I ate very well avoiding both.

We saw a veritable menagerie of animals. Owl, deer and two fawns, bunnies (cottontail). Wow, it was so special to see all that in one park right inside thge city. Magical.

I'm often surprised by the adaptability and resilience of nature. My tiny yard is bordered by big factories on two sides (one of them, Boemer Box Co, is now a bunch of studios), the train tracks behind, and a road busy with trucks in front. From a satellite view you can see that it's a very tiny patch of green in a sea of industry. Yet in my little backyard zoo we've seen an opossum, skunks, mice, a frog, rabbits, copper's hawks (twice feasting on a pigeon; there's still pigeon remains in my yard now...), racoons, a duck, squirrels, and bats. The night before last we woke up at 3 am with our four cats bouncing all over the place, oddly unified, chasing a bat in our bedroom! It's the second time we had one trapped in the house. The first one I caught, and released; but this one eluded me. When I returned from the shed with a net, the cats were scattered and the bat was nowhere to be found. I think it might reappear in the near future...

I'm most excited about the renovations of old warehouse and industrial space happening downtown in Kitchener (Kaufmann, Eaton, Mansion street). We've had (and continue to have) a horrible problem with suburban sprawl, but it's very heartening to see the number of housing spaces going in now. Not to mention that the universities are making an effort to put some faculties into the heart of downtown, rather than spreading out into farmer's fields more. I'm looking forward to more restaurants and fresh food shops going in to support the new density. Food shopping in walking distance of downtown! Yes please!

One of my favorite recent finds in Kitchener is the Monarch Woods, a small park in Kitchener, at the corner of Fischer Hallman and Highland. It's a beautiful park, hidden in a somewhat industrial city. It was cool and green and a little mysterious, with its tall trees coming right up to the busy intersection, the first few times I drove past. I finally went to explore it, not long ago, and was rewarded with the experience of a deep, peaceful place, filled with a surprising assortment of woodland flowers, and a cool stream. It connects to other parks, too, so you can go for kilometres through green spaces in the city, avoiding highly trafficked roads and crowds. Kitchener has several beautiful secluded spots like this, calm and peaceful despite the traffic that is only a few blocks away.
